I already know how to lead climb and lead belay, do I need to take this course to belay at East Peak?
No, if you are a confident lead climber you can register for a lead test online or in person.
What belay devices do you accept at the gym?
We only accept Gri-Gri or ATC (tube-style) belay devices, we do not allow other assisted braking, or geometry assisted belay devices at this time. This course will be taught on a Gri-Gri but we can also discuss any changes in belay on an ATC.
What can I work on, to prepare myself in advance of signing up for the lead course?
As a belayer, practice belaying with a little bit of slack in the system.
As a climber, practice our overhung routes, and practice letting go with one hand for 10 seconds each time you climb to a quickdraw.
Why do I have to be able to climb a 5.9 without resting?
Lead climbing is much more physically and mentally demanding than Top Rope climbing. To be able to provide a space where participants feel safe on the terrain we use in the lead course while learning new skills such as clipping, we require participants to be able to climb 5.9 routes on Top Rope without resting. If you feel ready for the course, but aren’t sure you’re climbing at this level feel free to email us at hello@eastpeakclimbing.ca and we can discuss the best way for you to learn how to lead climb.
Will this course teach me how to lead climb outdoors?
This course covers the fundamentals of indoor sport climbing. That being said we will touch on outdoor topics and skills to help you to transition to outdoor sport climbing.
My friend taught me how to lead climb/belay outdoors, is this course for me?
We always recommend being taught by a certified instructor. Our course offers you an in-depth knowledge of lead climbing, as well as getting you practice in a safe and controlled environment.
My belay partner is significantly lighter than me, are we able to lead climb together?
It is recommended to find a lead partner that is within 150% of your weight. However, there are tactics to assist with this issue, chat with a manager or email us at hello@eastpeakclimbing.ca so that we can discuss your specific scenario.
